Presidents Day - 16 February 2009
February 11th, 2009 by The bookadumpster.com USA Dumpster Rental TeamThis holiday celebrates the birthday of two of the greatest presidents of USA, George Washington, who was born on Feb 22 and Abraham Lincoln, born on Feb 12th. Originally this holiday was referred to as Washington’s Birthday and was celebrated on the 22nd of February. However, Washington’s Birthday has been publicly celebrated since he was in office, before Abraham Lincoln was even born. Much of the debate over the name of the holiday springs from the fact that state’s can follow their own holidays how they see fit and many of them chose to also honor Lincoln, calling the celebration President’s Day. In 1968 the term President’s Day came up for consideration in Congress, but was not accepted, although the holiday was moved to fall between the two President’s birthdays. Again in the 1980’s there was a resurgence of the term with advertisers which solidified the holiday name in American culture. Today, few Americans prefer to call the holiday Washington’s Birthday in lieu of President’s Day.
Approximately a dozen state governments have officially renamed their Washington’s Birthday observances as “Presidents Day”, “Washington and Lincoln Day”, or other such designations. However, “Presidents Day” is not always an all-inclusive term.
In New Jersey, Connecticut and Illinois, while Washington’s Birthday is a federal holiday, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday is still a state holiday, falling on February 12 regardless of the day of the week.
Alabama uniquely observes the day as “Washington and Jefferson Day”, even though Jefferson’s birthday was in April.
In Massachusetts, while the state officially celebrates “Washington’s Birthday,” state law also prescribes that the governor issue an annual Presidents Day proclamation honoring the presidents that have come from Massachusetts.
In California, Lincoln’s Birthday is a legal state holiday; however, observance is frequently moved to the Monday or Friday occurring closest to February 12. When Lincoln’s Birthday is observed on the Friday preceding Washington’s Birthday, the resultant four-day weekend is commonly called “Presidents’ Day Weekend”, particularly by retailers in their sale advertisements.
In Washington’s home state of Virginia the holiday is legally known as “George Washington Day.”
